Studying social media interaction on polarizing social/political issues with positions supported by religion/theology

Trans Day of Remembrance

November 18, 2025

November 20, is Transgender Day of Remembrance, as I learned recently from a podcast. It was first observed in 1999 in response to the murder of a Black trans woman in the Boston area (and others before that). It continues to be observed because trans people continue to be victims of violence. One might wonder why I am posting this here, and what it has to do with my research. The answer is that although I was not looking for particular topics in the polarized public social media interaction I studied, all of the comments that I analyzed in detail for my dissertation turned out to be related to “culture wars” about LGBTQIA+ identity and wokeness. As a result, although I may never have met a trans person offline, I have heard the perspectives expressed by trans people and their family members in the online interactions I studied.  For more on the interactions, check back in a week or two.
